Feds scan student records for terrorists

http://www.newsobserver.com/110/story/481240.html

In the days after 9/11, the Department of Education scanned the records of 14 million students that had applied for financial aid, looking for 1000 names supplied by the FBI.

With every carrot there comes a stick.

I'm not sure if it's just paranoia on my part, but it surely feels like the US is gearing up to have the most devastating and powerful fascist state the world has ever seen.

Eh. It'll probably explosively decompress in 2008.

See, I'm HUGE on privacy and small government and the war on terrorism basically being bullshit, but I don't see a problem with this.

Explain to me why this is evil.

Some terrorists have been shown to use government funding in their plans, posing as students.  So, go through student loan records (which are, last I checked, not private or protected data) and look for names on a short list gleaned from other intelligence.

So what?

Unless they're flat out lying about terrorist cells using federal loan funds to buy bombs and shit, in which case, so what?

Yeah, it isn't like they made all students of a public institution stop wearing their Arabic t-shirts.

Well that's a free speech issue, but what the fuck do I care if a federal agency goes through federal loan records that include my name?

Even if the justification is bullshit, who cares?

I'd be similiarly nonplussed if they had a good luck at my FHA file.

I think the word you want is "nonchalant", not "nonplussed"  (assuming you meant that you don't care if they peek into your private financial life)

Yeah, nonchalant.  Don't know why I used nonplussed as I KNOW what that means.  :-)

Anyway, Jesus Christ is today vocabulary police day?
